April 2026

President's Message

Julie Pingston

April is Autism Acceptance Month, and it is a perfect time to remind everyone of the work done throughout the destination for those with neurodiversities as well as those with other disabilities.

Over the past nine years, we have worked together as a destination to create opportunities within our community for those traveling on the autism spectrum. When we first started identifying sensory-friendly programs throughout the region, 1 in 56 children were diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum. Currently, that number is now 1 in 31 children due to increased screening and earlier diagnoses. Thanks to the ongoing work of the Mid-Michigan Autism Association and many others, there are more sensory friendly opportunities throughout the region for individuals and families seeking experiences that work best for their needs. We take pride that our region was recognized in 2024 by Accessible Journeys and Travel Ability as one of the top three destinations in the country for those traveling on the autism spectrum. Find information about the sensory-inclusive opportunities throughout the community.

We have also continued our efforts to provide information about the accessibility of our hotels, meeting and sport venues, attractions, restaurants and other points of interest. We partnered with AbleVu and Wheel the World to provide specific information, virtual tours, and photographic images as a know-before-you-go opportunity for visitors to understand our community before they arrive. We also have specific information on how to create a more accessible meeting/event.

The Lansing Sports Commission has made adaptive sports a priority for our destination and continues to provide sports opportunities for all levels of ability. Learn more about adaptive sports throughout the community.

As we’ve learned over the years, the work that is done for our visitors also enhances the quality of life for our residents. Let us know if you have additional ideas on how we can continue to provide new opportunities to expand our accessibility efforts. We are grateful for all the partners involved in the making our destination “welcoming to ALL. Find the complete accessibility information on our website at Accessible Travel.

Thank you!

Happy Spring!

For those who were unable to join us at last month’s Annual Meeting, we’re excited to share that 2025 was another record-breaking year for our region. We reached a total of 1,137,836 room nights consumed, and closed the year with our highest membership to date at 631 members. Even more impressive, we achieved a retention rate of 93.6%. Thank you for your continued partnership and for helping make our region such a successful destination.

If you haven’t yet registered for our second-quarter virtual event, we encourage you to do so. We’ll be joined by Meghan Ziehmer, Executive Director of the Lansing Sports Commission, who will share insights on several impactful sporting events coming to our region this quarter.

Please plan to join us on Monday, April 13, 2026, at 2:30 PM. Register to attend

In March, Melissa Nay had the honor of presenting James Lennon, Executive Director of the Old Town Commercial Association (OTCA), with a commemorative plaque recognizing the organization’s 30 years of impact in the Lansing area.

Founded in 1996, OTCA is a nonprofit organization committed to the revitalization, preservation, and continued growth of Lansing’s historic Old Town district. Over the past three decades, Old Town has evolved into one of the region’s most vibrant and sought-after destinations—celebrated for its locally owned businesses, thriving arts scene, signature festivals, and distinctive dining experiences.

Join us in celebrating Old Town as a true cornerstone of our community— an example of how vision, collaboration, and local pride can shape a destination. We are fortunate to have such a dynamic and culturally rich district contributing to our region’s identity for the past 30 years, and we look forward to its continued success for many years to come.
