President's Message

Julie Pingston

As we review the data at the halfway mark of 2025, I’d like to provide an update on where the hospitality industry is trending at mid-year.  We have been following the trend data from the U.S. Travel Association and Tourism Economics closely this year and “Economic concerns remain top of mind for American travelers—and sentiment has shifted from a signal to evident slowing. While far from catastrophic, declines are apparent in several key areas.” (Tourism Economics).  Additionally, according to Longwoods International’s American Travel Sentiment Study, “Rather than forgo travel, travelers are opting for shorter stays, less retail spending, and destinations closer to home.”

In terms of our local hotel measurements through June, hotel occupancy is up 1.8% over last year and the average daily rate of a hotel guest room is down 1% over last year which matches the trends nationally.  The decline in Canadian/international travel and economic uncertainties have affected destinations throughout the country.

Our community continues to develop and create new opportunities for visitors and there has been great progress recently on some impactful developments.

  • Construction has begun on the New Vision project in downtown Lansing by Gentilozzi Real Estate with the Tower on the Grand building, a 28-story skyscraper providing housing along the Grand River.
  • Renovations are wrapping up at Spartan Stadium to enhance the fan experience.
  • Enhancements by the Community Foundation are taking place along the River Trail in Old Town to improve the Brenke Fish Ladder and the surrounding park area to create an entertainment venue and gathering spot.
  • Potter Park Zoo is nearing completion of the new Animal Health Care Facility.
  • Construction is well underway for the new Lansing City Hall in downtown Lansing.
  • The City Rescue Mission is set to move to their new location with expanded capacity and services in early August.
  • The Dinosaur Explorer exhibition opened at Impression 5 Science Center and will be in place through September 7.
  • ASM Global is now providing management services for the Lansing Center, Jackson Field and Groesbeck Golf Course to unlock new opportunities to elevate the customer experience and drive greater economic impact.

Hope you have a great rest of the summer season!

Please reach out to me at jpingston@lansing.org if I can assist you in any way.  Thank you!
