Potter Park Zoo

Potter Park Zoo opened in 1920 and is one of the oldest continuously operated zoos in Michigan. It sits on 20 acres adjacent to Potter Park, an 80-acre oak forest. The zoo is home to 300 animals and 180 species. While elephants and giraffes are not at this zoo, popular exhibits include North American river otters, Magellanic Penguins, the critically endangered Black Rhinos, a Giant Anteater and favorite big cats, the African Lions and Siberian Tigers. The zoo is open 264 days a week and can be seen easily within a 90-minute walk. The zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

FAQs & Tips

Are dogs allowed at the zoo?

No, only service dogs are permitted.

Are there any free admission days?

Residents of Ingham County can visit the zoo for free on non-holiday Mondays from 9 a.m. to noon.

Do I have to get a ticket online or can I purchase one at the gate?

Tickets can be purchased either online at Potter Park Zoo Ticket Sales or at the gate.

What accommodations does the zoo offer for guests with specific needs?

Wheelchairs, ECV’s, wagons and strollers are available for rental. Please call 517-342-2765 to reverse an electric cart and inquire about wheelchair availability.

Sensory friendly bags are available for guests to check out, free of charge. Zoo staff have been trained to assist visitors with sensory sensitivities. A quiet room/nursing room is located at the Discovery Center at the zoo and is available for use by any guests.

A braille map is on display at the entrance of the zoo.

Can I bring food and drink into the zoo?

Outside food and drinks, aside from a refillable water bottle, are generally not permitted inside the zoo.
