Since the early 21st century, the number of office-holding women in the Michigan Legislature is declining. In 2011, Michigan ranked 36th among state legislatures for the proportion of women holding office according to the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers. The exhibit was created to address this backwards slide of progress because more women must be inspired, nurtured for leadership, and encouraged to get involved in their community and run for office. Visitors will meet 36 Michigan women that dared to lead the way and discover their legacy though stories of struggle and inspiration while learning what it takes to run for political office.
