The City of East Lansing and Michigan State University have announced the book selection for the 2017 One Book, One Community (OBOC) program: "A Long Way Home" by Saroo Brierley.
"A Long Way Home" is a #1 international bestseller based on the true story of author Saroo Brierley's journey from India to Australia and back again. After becoming lost from his family at the age of five, Saroo struggled to survive on the rough streets of Calcutta before being adopted by a loving couple in Australia. Raised in their caring home, Saroo's past slid away, but was never truly forgotten.
Remarkably, adult Saroo found his way back to his long lost village and family in India using Google Earth maps. Saroo's story became a media sensation and led to his book and the Oscar-nominated film "Lion," starring Dev Patel, Sunny Pawar, Nicole Kidman and Rooney Mara.
Community members are encouraged to read the book and attend a number of OBOC events planned for fall 2017, including a kick-off event featuring the author on Sunday, Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Road.
