If youre looking to escape the hustle and bustle of life and just get awayget awayget away from it all, I would suggest booking a stay at The English Inn. Located along the banks of the Grand River, this former auto barons estate is truly a delight. With more than a nod to an English manor-style home, this bed and breakfast is known far and wide for delicious food, sumptuous lodging and beautiful tended grounds.
Located on M-99 just south of I-96 after passing farmhouse after farmhouse and fields on the way to Eaton Rapids you can see The English Inn perfectly situated on a slight rise. Its built in the English Tudor style complete with ivy-covered brickwork and a welcoming front entryway. Upon entry, you can see the grand staircase which goes up to the rooms. The dining room is to your left down a few steps with a comforting fireplace and views of the back lawn. Dining at the English Inn is magical. The food is both traditional and delicious, but its the attention to detail and the romantic setting and formal service that makes you feel like youve stepped back in time. A Distinguished Restaurant of North American and one of OpenTables 100 most romantic restaurants in the nation, their awards say it all.
A visit to the pub downstairs is a must. This comfortable, more casual space replicates a small British pub and opens up to a patio which overlooks the gardens and lawns. When the weather is right, this is a great spot for more pub-type fare or an after dinner liqueur or cold afternoon drinks.
If youre staying overnight there are plenty of options for rooms. The main house has six bedrooms complete with private baths. Each room has a dcor and personality of its own but all retain the English charm and sophistication of their names; The Windsor, The Chelsea, The Somerset, The Brighton, The Avon and The Bath. Another option is to rent the Ivy Cottage. A little bit more casual, but more private, its the former estates milking house and comes complete with a kitchenette, living room and king size bedroom. If you have multiple couples or family that wants to stay together, then the Honeysuckle Cottage is ideal. Three private guestrooms with a shared kitchenette and living space with a wood burning fireplace.
The most recent addition to The English Inn are the adorable Croquet Cottages. Newly constructed, they are more modern (with nice big flat screen TVs) but still retain the English dcor with comfy beds, the fireplaces and each have a small balcony overlooking the Croquet court and gardens.
The English Inn is definitely a place to get away from it all in a timeless setting. Pair this with a cooking class at Le Chat Gourmet in Eaton Rapids and your grownup getaway is complete.
