I know playing favorites is usually a bad idea but when it comes to March Magic Hoopfest, I just can’t help myself. At the risk of hurting some feelings I’m going to come out and say March Magic Hoopfest is my favorite event of the year.

hoopie.jpgWhy? There are a lot of reasons. First, it’s held indoors, so you don’t need to worry and wonder about good weather. Two, it’s kind of a basketball open house, where you can jump in and do whatever you want. Different fun skill stations full of various physical activities. You can literally get into the event and run around like a kid. Try doing that at a beer tent or music festival and people will look at you funny, trust me. Third, the event is a kick-off to spring, a time of real anticipation and good things to come. Lastly I guess my favorite thing is how the event is wide open, everything is up to me. I don’t have to run all over town, or be in a certain place at a certain time or sit and listen to someone blah blah on. When you walk into Hoopfest it’s like you’ve gone back in time and the bell to begin recess just sounded. You know what I mean? Basketballs are flying all over and you hear people laughing and talking and you just can’t wait to get out into it. There are 7 or 8 different skill stations with volunteers working the station to help rebound, corral loose balls and explain the rules so don’t worry about that. My favorite station is either around the world or the three-point shoot-out. Another fun one is the slam dunk area. This one is fun to both try and watch. If your dunking days are long over, or you’re too young to put one down, have a seat and sit back and watch the young men and women fly through the air and put down a major jam. Since 2009 this event has been a family-friendly, wide open and fun event held in conjunction with the MHSAA State Basketball Semi-finals and Finals. While the State tournament games are going on at the Breslin Center the fun is on at Jenison Field House for attendees of the games looking for a blast of fun, or just folks coming from far and wide to engage in this hands-on basketball playground.

I’ll be there on Saturday you can be sure of that. Come by and say hi, play against Hoopie in a game of one-on-one and kick off your spring with a day of fun you’ll look forward to all year like I do!
