Matt Vande Bunte is a Grand Rapids-based writer whose current project is checking items off his LAN 150 Bucket List. In a previous life, Matt visited the Capitol with his school class and found himself back in the rotunda as a journalist covering Lansing and Michigan politics. Now his focus has turned a bit less serious, writing about his travels across Michigan and finding a valid excuse for playing hooking on the putting course at Hawk Hollow.

So, you’ve been tasked with planning a company outing. (Gee, thanks, boss.) Or maybe a big family reunion. (Happy to do it, mom.) Need help? The Greater Lansing Convention & Visitors Bureau (GLCVB) gives free assistance to professional meeting planners all the time, helping them pull off killer events in the Capital Region. The same rules of thumb apply to your gathering.

Yes, I admit, it’s brash to call an appetizer the “best.” There are scores of restaurants in Greater Lansing where you can eat appetizing food (stuffed delicata squash at Capital Prime, anyone?) and, of course, I haven’t tasted everything on every menu. So it’s probably more accurate to say the eats that follow are only my personal favorites.

If you are looking for a great way to spend an enjoyable – and very affordable – afternoon in a family friendly environment, look no further than the Potter Park Zoo. Michigan's first and oldest zoo, this Lansing area landmark has provided visitors with the opportunity to see a wide variety of animals from around the world for more than a century.

Summer is in the home stretch, but there’s still time to make great family memories before school starts. In a few months we’ll all be hunkered down indoors for another Michigan winter, so it’s time to enjoy warm weather outdoor activities with your kids before they are back on the school bus.

Eagle Eye Golf Club in Lansing regularly gets rated as 18 of the best holes in Michigan, and even among the best in the country. With an iconic island green replica of the famous 17th hole at the TPC at Sawgrass, Eagle Eye is a must-play that should be on every golfer’s bucket list if they haven’t already played it.

With a favorite club in hand and the hole little more than 100 yards away, it’s still nerve-wracking to stand on the 17th tee at Eagle Eye Golf Club. Even with only pride at stake.

Whether you’d rather hit the links for the last few hours of sunlight or hit the bar for distinctive craft beer and spirits, Michigan's Capital region can help you relax. The middle of the Mitten has so much to experience you’ll wish your conference would last another day.

Distinctive brewpubs? Check.

Memorable burgers? Check.

“Nasty Woman Pancakes?” Yep. (We’ll explain in a moment.)

Lansing has all that and more, serving it up with a unique Capital City flair that can be found nowhere else. From food trucks to fine dining, you can find whatever suits your palate – and your budget.

Whatever you are you in the mood for, here’s a month’s worth of our favorites for you to trying any order you'd like:
